Sanhujori and confinement: postpartum traditions of the East
Across East Asia, the weeks after birth have long been set apart for recovery. In Korea this is sanhujori. In other places it is known as confinement.
Sanhujori
Sanhujori is the Korean practice of caring for a mother after birth. It centres on warmth, nourishing food such as seaweed soup, and true rest.
Confinement traditions
Similar practices exist in many cultures, often called a confinement period. In some countries, dedicated confinement centres care for mothers in the first weeks.
What these traditions share
The details differ, but the belief is shared: a new mother deserves to be cared for while her body recovers.
The Fourth Sanctuary brings this wisdom together with expert-led Western midwifery.
