Postpartum doula or postpartum retreat?

Both a postpartum doula and a postpartum retreat exist to support a new mother. They do so in different places, and in different ways.

A postpartum doula

A postpartum doula offers practical and emotional support at home, often for a few hours at a time. Doulas are usually not medical professionals; their role is companionship, help and reassurance.

A postpartum retreat

A retreat cares for you away from home. Meals, rest and care are arranged around you, day and night. At The Fourth Sanctuary that care is clinically guided and grounded in Western midwifery, alongside the tradition of sanhujori.

Questions to ask yourself

Would you rather recover at home or be cared for elsewhere? How much support do you have nearby? Is continuous care, through the night, important to you?

Some families combine both: a stay first, then support at home.
